STRAW BALE VASHON. The first of its kind to be permitted as a residence in King County, this home is a testament to the simple beauty of straw bales and traditional stucco. The permit required seismic testing and moisture monitoring. The bales passed with flying colors.
Now over 12 years old, this home has weathered our marine climate very well, while the thick straw bale walls provide super insulation.
Aside from straw bale walls, the home is made from salvaged and scrounged materials-flooring of the loft from drafting table tops surplussed by Boeing, end-grain blocks of redwood found at a garage sale, posts culled from madrona trees felled to build the house, to name just a few.
A LOCAL GEM RESTORED. Built in 1922 for one of Seattle's prominent families, this lovely manse was restored and refitted with sustainable modern materials, reclaimed woods and artifacts, and high efficiency residential systems and controls.

What once was a window became a sunny doorway to the backyard. The new canopy is a diminutive replica of the original over the front door.
